Hey there, friends! Andrea Joy here, and today I want to talk about finding inspiration in unexpected places. Specifically, I want to share how the life of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, has inspired me and my work with Joy Brings Light.
As some of you may know, Fox Searchlight is releasing a film directed by Stephen Williams called Chevalier, which is based on the life of Joseph Bologne. He was a fascinating figure - a Black man in 18th century France who rose to prominence as a virtuoso violinist, a champion fencer, a prolific composer, and even led the first French military regiment of Black soldiers. Despite facing racism and prejudice, he rose to great heights and left a lasting legacy.
Chevalier has inspired me to think about how I can incorporate Joseph Bologne's spirit into my own work. One thing that particularly stands out to me was his dedication to his craft. Despite facing immense challenges, he continued to pursue his passion for music and fencing. This reminds me of the importance of staying committed to the things that bring us joy, even when it's not easy.
Another aspect of Joseph Bologne's life that resonates with me was his ability to bring people together. As an Artivist (Artist + activist), he used his talents to bridge gaps between people of different backgrounds and classes. This inspired me to think about how I can use my own multidisciplinary artistry to create spaces that foster connection and community.
On that note, I'm excited to announce that I will be participating in the Omaha premiere of Chevalier! The event will feature live music, a pre-show hosted by myself, a screening of the film, and will be followed by a panel discussion featuring experts on music, history, and social justice. Panelists will include Jade R Rogers of The House of Afros, Capes, & Curls, Dani Meier of the Omaha Symphony, Stephen Nelson of B&B Sports Academy, and me, Andrea Joy Pearson of Joy Brings Light. This discussion which will delve deeper into the life of Joseph Bologne and the themes of Chevalier will be moderated by Jeff Koterba of Alliance Française Omaha.
In keeping with Joseph Bologne's legacy of bringing people together, we encourage attendees of all backgrounds to come and join in the conversation. I encourage you all to seek inspiration in unexpected places - whether it's a historical figure like Joseph Bologne, or simply taking the time to appreciate the beauty of the natural world around us. As always, remember to create a culture that you enjoy, and keep spreading joy wherever you go!
Until next time,
Andrea Joy
